Performance of Passive UHF RFID Systems in Practice

چکیده
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that has risen to prominence over the past decade. The clear advantages of this technology over traditional identification methods, along with mandates from supply chain giants like Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense, led to a large number of research and commercialization efforts in the early 2000s. However, almost a decade on, the early promise of widespread, ubiquitous adoption of RFID is yet to materialize. This is due to a combination of several technical and commercial factors. The technical imperfections and shortcomings existing in presentday RFID systems pose a very significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of RFID. Overcoming some of these challenges would amount to a very significant step forward towards realizing the tremendous potential of RFID technology. This book describes the ongoing efforts of some of the leading researchers in the field towards tackling the most challenging issues in today’s RFID systems. With this in mind, the aim of this chapter is to clearly demonstrate, through experimentation, some of these technical challenges faced by RFID systems in practice. This chapter will enable the reader to better recognize the shortcomings of today’s RFID systems and will allow for a better understanding and appreciation of the research efforts described in the rest of the book. In this chapter, we focus on passive RFID systems operating in the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band and adhering to the popular EPC Global Class 1 Generation 2 (Gen 2)

Measurement of Effective Reading Distance of UHF RFID Passive Tags
Currently, for manufacturing UHF RFID passive tags, the online inspection mechanism is very simple. This mechanism tries to read tag IDs in the near field, and hence validates tag’s usability. For UHF RFID applications, tag usability is a very rough indicator and cannot characterize the performance of a tag accurately. In practice, effective reading distance is the key performance index of a ta...

As ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, a smart recognition technology, has been gradually spreading to various applications, and several sub-1GHz wireless technologies are being standardized and developed. As such technologies operate at a specific frequency band (902–928MHz industrial, scientific, and medical bands), the impact of RF interference due to...

Simulation and Analysis of RFID Localization Algorithms. Radio frequency identification (RFID) based localization systems provide a unique approach to localize mobile entities equipped with RFID readers or tagged with RFID tags. UHF RFID systems using passive tags are a good choice considering their cost, reading range, and reliability. With global acceptance and deployment of UHF RFID systems ...
متن کاملDesign of Passive UHF RFID Tag Antennas Using Metamaterial-Based Structures and Techniques
Metamaterials (Marques et al., 2008; Eleftheriades & Balmain, 2005; Herraiz-Martinez et al. 2009) are one of the many new technologies being adopted to improve the performance of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems (Finkenzeller, 2003; Stupf et al., 2007). In particular, metamaterial-based antenna designs are being used more frequently to improve the read range and reduce the size of ...
متن کاملPerformance benchmarks for passive UHF RFID tags
This paper describes the first comprehensive benchmark suite for passive UHF RFID tags. These benchmarks give good indications as to how well RFID products will work in “real world” scenarios. We present benchmarks and give some experimental results, as well as key insights that these benchmarks have revealed about the nature of current UHF RFID tags on the market.
